Saving for College – A New Year’s Resolution Worth Sticking to

The new-year is upon us and that means many of us have set resolutions like finding time to exercise more, eat well or accomplish a long-established goal. (Check out our latest GET video featuring our mascot “Hootie” as he considers some New Year’s goals.)

While I see the merit in making resolutions, I’ve never been one to make too many of them. There is one life-changing resolution I did make 15 years ago when I was hired as the Director of the GET program. Believe it or not, my husband and I had not started saving for our children’s’ college education and I knew if we did not start then, we were never going to make it happen. We started small and kept adding to the effort over the years and I am proud to say that both of my kids graduated debt-free! My son recently completed his MBA at the University of Washington and is now a project manager at Microsoft and my daughter followed in her father’s footsteps and is a first grade teacher.

As a parent, there is no greater joy and feeling of pride than seeing your adult children living out their dreams and contributing to their community in a meaningful way. I am so grateful that we saved for our children’s college education because I truly believe the opportunities they’ve been afforded today are the result of their hard work in the classroom and our commitment as parents in instilling strong moral character and a caring heart.

Since I started my job here at Washington’s Guaranteed Education Tuition (GET) Program nearly 15 years ago, I’ve had the opportunity to talk with thousands of parents and I’ve always felt like I’ve had a connection with our customers because of the common bond we share in helping our children reach their full potential.

As we head into 2015, I want to thank the nearly 160,000 Washington families who have chosen to save with GET and I want you to know that our team is here to help you achieve your savings goals.

Where in the World is Hootie, The College Super Saver?

Wheres-Hootie

In case you missed it, a couple weeks ago we welcomed the newest member of the GET Team – Hootie, The College Super Saver. Since starting with GET, Hootie’s already been busy rescuing families from future student loan debt by helping them start their college savings. Recently Hootie caught wind of a rumor that students have used GET to pay for tuition and qualified expenses at colleges, universities and technical schools in all 50 states and 14 foreign countries. So, this month Hootie is packing his bags, spreading his wings and taking flight to colleges and universities around the globe to find out if this rumor has any merit.

Each week in August, Hootie will be at a different school touring their campus, learning about their academic programs and hunting for evidence as to whether GET has truly been used at schools around the world. We’ll need your assistance in keeping tabs on him, so we’re running a contest on our Facebook page where you can to help us locate him. Every Tuesday we’ll provide clues and ask you to tell us what school he’s at. The first Facebook fan to post the correct answer on our Facebook timeline will win a prize*:

  •          Week #1: $50 Barnes and Noble Gift Card
  •          Week #2: $50 Amazon Gift Card
  •          Week #3: $50 Barnes and Noble Gift Card
  •          Week #4: $50 Amazon Gift Card

These prizes were selected in the spirit of the nationwide effort to prevent kids from experiencing the dreaded summer learning loss. We hope that the winners of these gift cards will find them useful in keeping their kids reading for the rest of the summer. For some extra fun (and a great research and learning opportunity), we encourage you to work together with your kids to identify the school Hootie is visiting each week. Hootie has his work cut out for him as he sets out on his quest to unearth the facts. So hold on and get ready to help us tail him as he takes off in hot pursuit of the truth.

*Disclaimer: GET’s August “Where in the World is Hootie?” promotion will take place from Tuesday, August 5, 2014 through Tuesday, August 26, 2014. Once a week during the promotion on Tuesday, GET will post clues about the location of their mascot on the program’s Facebook page. Each week, one $50 gift card (to Barnes and Noble in weeks one and three, and to Amazon in weeks two and four) will be awarded to the first GET Facebook fan that guesses the correct answer. To be eligible to win the weekly prize, fans must post their guess on GET’s Facebook timeline. The first fan to guess the correct answer will be determined as the prize winner. Selected winners will be notified by GET via Facebook private message and will have seven days to claim their prize by replying to the private message. If they do not reply the GET program within seven days, the prize will be awarded to the next fan who guessed the correct answer. Gift card prizes will be delivered to prize winners no later than September 30, 2014. When prizes are sent, there will be an enclosed form confirming receipt of the gift card. Prize winners will be required to complete this form and return to the program no later than October 31, 2014. Individuals can only win one prize during the course of the entire promotion. Washington Student Achievement Council employees and their families are not eligible. Facebook, Amazon and Barnes and Noble are not affiliated with, and do not otherwise support or endorse this promotion or the GET program.
